ABOUT THE RUNNING CLUB

The Little Yoga Studio | San Diego, CA

THE WORKOUT
The Running Club in San Diego was created for those who love to run or power walk but tend to skip out on post-workout stretching. Since stretching is an integral yet often neglected component of running performance, the Running Club was created in 2010 as a means to increase flexibility and prevent running injuries by combining yoga and running, while also providing a social element. The workout begins at 8 a.m. every Saturday morning, where two groups of exercisers–one running and one power walking–leave the studio and head out on a 45-minute route planned by an instructor. The two groups of exercisers then meet back at the Little Yoga Studio for a powerful 30-minute yoga stretch designed to target all of the body’s tight spots. The result is a 75 minute session that boosts the heart rate, strengthens and stretches major muscle groups, and captures the beauty of San Diego in a dynamic group environment.

THE SCENE
The Running Club begins at The Little Yoga Studio, an exotic yet contemporary yoga locality in downtown San Diego. The instructor typically chooses one of three beautiful and scenic routes–Balboa Park, Harbor drive or the Convention Center–for the runners and walkers to complete. Requiring only running shoes, comfortable workout clothes, and a positive attitude, the Running Club is enjoyed by San Diego natives, out-of-towners, fitness enthusiasts and novices alike.

THE INSPIRATION
After a 7-year stint in marketing and advertising, Maria Camacho moved to the United States in search of greater opportunity. However, a year later, in 2001, while on a yoga mat, Camacho found more than opportunity–she found herself.

“When I discovered yoga in 2001, a whole new world opened before me,” recalls Camacho. “I knew immediately that I wanted to devote my life to yoga and to helping others practice.”

After receiving her instructor certification through a 200 hour teacher training program in November 2007, Camacho opened The Little Yoga Studio with the intention of creating a space for personal growth and to share the gift of yoga with her community.

“The Little Yoga Studio is my dream come true,” said Camacho. “I am grateful for every single student and teacher that has come through our door. I acknowledge how we all learn from each other and how we are all connected somehow.”

Recognizing the many benefits of yoga, specifically in terms of preventing running injuries, Camacho teamed up with one of her instructors, Deborah Ignacio, a graduate of Federal University with a degree in Exercise Physiology, to introduce the Running Club to the San Diego community. In less than a year, the Running Club has blossomed into an indispensable program celebrated by both existing and new members of The Little Yoga Studio.

“For those that only participate in yoga at our studio it is a great way to add a cardio workout to the mix,” said Ignacio, a native of Brazil. “And for the runners that live in the neighborhood, we are introducing them to yoga,” she added. “It’s a great combination!”

The Fusion Workout

LOCATION: Progressive Fitness

CATEGORY: Most Unique Workout

CITY: San Diego

COST: $30 Drop In/$199 Unlimited

THE WORKOUT
For over 5 years the Fusion workout has been helping men and women of San Diego gain more flexibility, increase strength, and improve their overall conditioning. Using the Gravity Training System (GTS)–a dynamic pulley apparatus that encourages the body to move naturally and synergistically–while also utilizing spin bikes intermittently, the Fusion workout combines the body sculpting effects of traditional strength training, the deep core isolation of Pilates, the flexibility benefits of Yoga, and the endurance training of spinning. Geared towards men and women aged 18-55 with moderate to high activity levels, the complexity and core strength that is needed to perform these exercises makes Fusion the most challenging, core-intensive workout offered at Progressive Fitness. Fusing together both dynamic and isometric movements to challenge all of your muscles from as many different angles as possible, the Fusion workout promises to build strength from the inside out in a mere 55 minutes per class.

THE SCENE
Located approximately 7 miles from downtown San Diego, CA, Progressive Fitness resides amongst the other small, independent businesses that inhabit Ocean Beach. In a modern studio equipped mostly with GTS machines and spin bikes, clients of Progressive Fitness enjoy small class sizes, individualized instruction, and the only program in Ocean Beach and Point Loma that integrates the Gravity Training System with spin bikes.

ABOUT THE RIDE AND GLIDE®

THE WORKOUT
The Original Ride and Glide® workout was developed in 2008 by Dana Cahill of F-Max Fitness in San Diego, CA. Utilizing the Gravity Training System (GTS)–a dynamic pulley apparatus that combines the fundamentals of pilates and strength training to encourage the body to move naturally and synergistically–in conjunction with schwinn spinner bikes, the Ride and Glide® workout is a fun, fast-paced, interval-based class that develops strength and boosts the heart rate simultaneously. After a thorough warm-up, the Ride and Glide instructors lead the class through intervals consisting of 90 seconds on the spin bikes followed by 2-3 strength training exercises on the GTS machines. The outcome is a complete, full-body workout burning anywhere from 500-700 calories in as little as 50 minutes. Read more of this post

San Diego – Outdoor Outreach

San Diego-based non-profit organization empowers at-risk youth through outdoor activities, development programs, and life-changing experiences.

Outdoor Outreach Mountain Biking 003Outdoor Outreach Rock Climbing 00115_jpgOutdoor Outreach surfing 007

THE ORGANIZATION
Founded in 1999, Outdoor Outreach is a San Diego-based non-profit organization that leverages the power of outdoor activities to make positive, lasting changes in the lives of at-risk and underprivileged youth. The programs, offered in conjunction with partner agencies and schools with at-risk youth, are designed to provide positive, healthy alternatives to the negative influences that surround them. For instance, activities such as climbing a cliff, surfing a wave or snowboarding down a mountain present exhilarating challenges and empowering experiences that help cultivate a healthier mind, stronger body, and a more positive outlook. Working with drug rehabilitation programs, inner-city boys and girls clubs, inner-city public schools, residential boys homes, and several programs within the juvenile justice system, Outdoor Outreach has taken more than 5,000 youth on over 1,500 outings, including rock climbing, snowboarding, surfing, snorkeling, mountain biking and backpacking.

PROGRAMS
The majority of youth served through Outdoor Outreach programs live in inner-city communities with high concentrations of low-income, minority residents. These youth typically experience higher rates of substance abuse, child abuse and neglect, unintended teen pregnancy, youth violence and lower rates of high school graduation than in other county communities. Thus, each of Outdoor Outreach’s programs are influenced by youth development models proven to improve teens’ ability to thrive, despite their family and community challenges. Outdoor Outreach activities foster academic achievement, skill- and competency-building, self-efficacy, self-worth, and hopefulness–as well as a deeper connectedness with peers, caring adults, the community and the natural environment. These factors have been shown to promote healthy youth development across a spectrum of adolescents, regardless of gender, age or ethnicity.

THE INSPIRATION
Since 1999, Christopher Rutgers has been pioneering Outdoor Outreach–the only agency in San Diego and one of just a few in the country to utilize outdoor and physical experiences to provide youth with the support, relationships, resources and opportunities they need to become successful adults. As a lifelong outdoors enthusiast, Rutgers founded and continues to direct Outdoor Outreach with the same passion he used to overcome his own at-risk childhood. After recognizing the lack of opportunities and resources available for San Diego’s youth–the underprivileged youth in particular–Rutgers became devoted to providing the antidote, often drawing from his own personal experiences to do so.

“I began Outdoor Outreach specifically to give at-risk and underprivileged youth the same life-changing opportunities I had,” said Rutgers. “Outdoor Outreach is committed to transforming the lives of at-risk youth by providing comprehensive, ongoing programming designed to produce profound, life-changing opportunities with measurable impact.”

The neighborhoods served by Outdoor Outreach experience amongst the highest rates of gang membership and juvenile referrals to probation in the county. Moreover, the public schools within these neighborhoods have some of the highest student drop-out rates and lowest academic performance scores in the county. Accordingly, Outdoor Outreach is providing an outlet proven to be successful amongst this population.

“Outdoor Outreach programs have a proven and measurable track record of improving the lives of the youth we serve,” said Rutgers. “From academic achievement, leadership development, social skills, improved physical health and even environmental awareness, our programs continue to provide evident results.”

In fact, these results have earned Rutgers national recognition as an expert on programming for youth and key-note speeches at national conferences and symposiums. Similarly, Rutgers consults with government agencies, academic institutions and other nonprofit organizations and has served as an advisor to the California Governor’s Office, California State Parks and the National Park Service on developing programs for at-risk youth. In addition, Chris has won numerous local and national awards for his programs’ successes including San Diego’s KGTV Channel 10 Leadership Award and Newsweek magazine’s “America’s Best.”

San Diego – Pole Dancing For Fitness

The Pole Dancing for Fitness workout provides women of San Diego, CA a fun, exciting and effective alternative to the ordinary fitness classes offered in the area.

POLE DANCING FOR FITNESS

Fun Pole Fitness | San Diego, CA

THE WORKOUT
Pole Dancing for Fitness at Fun Pole Fitness in San Diego, CA was created for all women–regardless of age, size, or ability–who are bored with the gym and in need of something fun and exciting to get or stay fit. The workout, ideal for developing upper body strength while having fun at the same time, requires only stiletto heels, a pole, and a willingness to let yourself feel sexy. Following a 3-5 minute warm-up on the floor, participants of the workout cover all the Pole Dancing for Fitness fundamentals–including how to safely walk around in stilettos, the essentials of correct posture, and even how to protect the all-too-often neglected shoulder joints strained during various exercises. Then, as the music starts pumping, the exercisers are guided through a series of challenging, yet liberating spins and floor routines choreographed by the instructor. Movements such as hip and chest rolls, the Pony Walk, and body rolls require each participant to use both upper- and lower-body muscles while engaging the core throughout the entire process. Thus, one can expect to walk away with a full-body burn, an exclusive new dance routine, and a great sweat in as little as 60 minutes a session.

THE SCENE
Pole Dancing for Fitness is offered at Fun Pole Fitness–a distinguished, independent studio in the North Park area of San Diego. Behind closed curtains and with no spectators allowed, participants enjoy a private environment that encourages self-expression, laughter and progress—all-the-while learning new moves to great music. And, because each exerciser gets their own pole for the entire class, Fun Pole Fitness has a “leg up” on the other workouts in town that require participants to share stations.

THE INSPIRATION
Marie Davidson, owner of Fun Pole Fitness, has always been keen on fitness and nutrition. However, it wasn’t until eight years ago, after countless workouts and hours at the gym, that Marie decided she no longer wanted to attend fitness classes–she wanted to teach them.

“I found out first-hand that regular fitness classes can get really boring, really fast,” said Davidson. “I wanted something different – so instead of waiting around for someone to offer something better, I figured I would just create it myself.”

In no time at all, Davidson began teaching Cardio Kickboxing and Abs Blast, became certified by the American Council on Exercise as a Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor, and went on to instruct a variety of fitness curricula including beach boot camp, body pump, stretch, cycling, and even Gravity classes. However, it wasn’t until learning how to employ pole dancing as a springboard for better fitness that she found her niche.

“My passion has always been helping people reach their goals and working with individuals as they progress,” said Davidson. “So when I learned about Pole Dancing as a way to get and stay fit, I knew I had to try it–and when I did, I was hooked.”

After earning her certification through Pole Position Fitness in July of 2007, Marie opened Fun Pole Fitness in order to provide women with an alternative to the more traditional fitness classes available throughout the San Diego area. Today, Marie and her full-time staff of qualified trainers are available for instruction in multiple fitness-based programs including Intro to Pole, Pole Conditioning, Pole Tricks, Lap Dance and Burlesque, and more.
