Dick Hartzell, known as the “Rubber Band Man”, invented Flex Band® exercise equipment and founded his company, Jump Stretch, Inc., in 1980. He held numerous place-kicking records at his alma mater, Youngstown State University, that remained intact from the early ‘60s to the mid- ‘90s. Expert Bio – Bob Whelan, MS, CSCS

Bob Whelan – Owner, Fitness Director, Strength Coach at Whelan Strength Training

Bob Whelan has a Masters Degree in Exercise Science and Health from George Mason University and a Masters Degree in Management from Troy University. He is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (NSCA) and is certified as a Physical Training Instructor by the International Combat Martial Arts Federation (ICMAF).

Bob served as the District of Columbia National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA) State Director for over 5 years. He has been making Washington, DC stronger since 1990 running Whelan Strength Training, one of the most comprehensive personal strength & conditioning programs in the world.

He formerly worked as an exercise physiologist at The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and as the strength & conditioning coach at Catholic University. He taught a self-designed course, Strength Fitness, at Northern Virginia Community College. He has trained athletes from the NFL, NBA, NCAA, Womens Professional Basketball, and various combat and strength athletes.

He was an off-season conditioning consultant to the Boston Celtics for two summers. Bob competed as a powerlifter for seven years and set several military powerlifting records, going undefeated for a three year span. He lifted “raw” and had a bench press that was double his bodyweight and a deadlift that was triple his bodyweight. He was the base powerlifting coach and coached the team to the USAFE championship in 1983.

He has written over 100 published strength training articles. He was a contributing author in the strength and fitness guide book, MAXIMIZE YOUR TRAINING.

Dave started practicing Tai Chi in 1992 and yoga in 1998. He has been teaching yoga full-time since 2001 at several locations including Boston Sports Clubs, Healthworks, Fitcorp and the Cambridge Family YMCA. Prior to becoming a yoga teacher, Dave had a 10-year career as a Social Worker, which culminated in the position of Director of the St. Ambrose Family Inn (a shelter for homeless families in Dorchester, MA) and with one year of study at the Smith School for Social Work.

Dave is a Yoga Alliance certified Experienced Yoga Teacher and has been trained in various yoga styles, including: Anusara, Ashtanga, Power and various forms of Hatha. Dave believes there are several ingredients that help practicioners get the most out of their yoga practice, including: mindful breathing, strengthening, lengthening, relaxation and meditation. Tim Allerton- Owner of Allerton Exercise Physiology LLC.

Tim is a medical researcher and exercise physiologist that specializes in muscle physiology and clinical exercise. Allerton Exercise Physiology is housed at One-to-One Personal Training and Clinical Exercise LLC. A certified personal trainer, Tim utilizes High Intensity Super Slow resistance training to produce maximum gains in minimal time.  Tim is also a research associate at LSU Health Sciences School of Medicine in the section of Endocrinology, Nutrition, and Diabetes.
