The Condition Kettlebell Workout
LOCATION: Condition Kettlebell Gym
CATEGORY: Best Group Exercise
THE WORKOUT
Geared toward busy professionals who can appreciate the efficiency and effectiveness of full-body exercises, the Condition Kettlebell Workout strengthens multiple muscle groups while simultaneously delivering cardio and flexibility benefits. The workout typically includes a joint mobility warm-up from head to toe, followed by 30:30 second training intervals consisting of body-weight exercises as well as Kettlebell Swings, Get-Ups, Cleans, Presses, Squats, Snatches, and more. The result is a full-body blow-out, burning anywhere from 600-900 calories in a matter of 45 minutes.
THE SCENE
Located in the Studioplex building–a former cotton warehouse built in 1898–between downtown Atlanta and Inman Park, the Condition Kettlebell Gym is a no frills, no gimmicks, no fitness machines training zone. Rather, the Condition Kettlebell Gym is equipped with only kettlebells and pull-up bars–the main ingredients of real strength, lean muscle training.
THE INSPIRATION
Back in 2004, when Delaine Ross was fresh out of college, she was eager to take on the world with her degree from Georgia Tech in hand. However her first professional gig as an outside sales rep wasn’t exactly demanding enough to curb her energy, so she began dabbling in the gym to occupy her time. Frustrated by a lack of results, working out quickly went from a hobby to an obsession, and Delaine found herself clocking in over 12 hours at the gym each week.
“I was training for 2 hours a day, 6 times a week,” recalls Delaine. “At the time I was still new to training and didn’t really know what I was doing, so I thought that in order to get results I had to put that much time in.”
Soon, however, Delaine jumped at a career opportunity in San Diego which wasn’t as accommodating to her training regimen. Working 55 hours a week while trying to balance life and a relationship didn’t leave much time for the gym, and her 12 hours a week quickly dwindled.
“I was still passionate about training, but no matter how much I rearranged my schedule I just couldn’t find the time I needed to get the results I was after,” said Delaine. “I was also becoming bored with the gym–to the point that the thought of running on a treadmill started making me sick to my stomach.”
Unaware that there were alternatives to the traditional machines and free-weights at the gym, Delaine was immediately intrigued by a radio segment talking about kettlebells at a local fitness studio. Even though she had never heard of them, she was sold by the testaments of callers claiming that the kettlebell classes dramatically decreased their time in the gym by incorporating strength, cardio and flexibility all at the same time.
“It sounded too good to be true, so I decided to go down one Saturday morning for a ‘trial class’ to check it out for myself,” said Delaine. “I was blown away…from the moment I left the class I knew that I wanted to provide a quicker, more effective way for people to exercise,” she added. “I quit my job and never looked back.”
Today, Delaine is not only the founder and owner of Condition Kettlebell Gym–the only exclusive kettlebell fitness center in Atlanta, GA–but is also 1 of only 40 Certified Russian Kettlebell Team Leaders in the World, and the only one in the entire state of Georgia.
